These nostalgic images show supermarket shoppers filling Sainsbury's in the 1990s.

The Bridgemead store celebrated its 25th birthday in 1998 and the Stratton store tried to cut down on queues at the tills.

The chain - then known as J. Sainsbury - supported local good causes like the Salvation Army and organised its goods into colourful and eye-catching displays, such as the clover-shaped islands full of fruit and veg.

One panoramic view of the tills captures the pre-Christmas rush as customers stocked up on everything they needed for the festive season.
