A parish council has called using parts from a different railway service to GWR in a memorial for the local railway an 'unfortunate oversight'.

A set of railway wheels was put back on display in the aptly named GWR Park late last year, but keen-eyed enthusiasts spotted that the chairs that the wheels are mounted on are from a different railway altogether - London, Midland and Scotland Railway (LMS).

This has been labelled a "terrible mistake" by members of the public who expressed their displeasure to South Swindon Parish Council - the party responsible for reinstalling it.

But the parish council has thanked those who raised concerns for flagging it with them and has promised to get it sorted.

Former councillor Stan Pajak is one of the people who has been pressing the parish council to get the correct GWR chairs having raised it at council meetings.

They are such a great tribute to GWR but sadly it was not quite right," he said.

"The chairs used are from LMS which was from the 1920s while GWR was from the 1800s. This has been classed by some as an insult to GWR heritage because when it comes to the railway, the details do matter."

He added: "It’s one of those things, if you’re a car enthusiast and collect Jaguars, you wouldn't stick sticks Volkswagen hub caps on it and so it is no surprise that dedicated people are protective of Swindon’s heritage in that way."

Stan believes he may have sourced the correct GWR chairs from Didcot, and hopes that the parish council will be able to secure them from there to replace the incorrect ones.

A spokesperson for South Swindon Parish Council said: "The set of railway wheels at GWR Park was recently reinstated after being removed a few years ago due to criminal damage.

"It is an unfortunate oversight on the council’s part that the chairs they are sat in are of LMS (London, Midland and Scotland Railway) origin rather than our own GWR. We would like to thank the residents who flagged this with us."

"We are in the process of sourcing GWR chairs and hope to rectify this issue as soon as possible."
