The Met Office predicted disruption to rail services with its yellow weather warning for rain this weekend and sure enough it has happened.

Two Great Western Railway lines travelling to and from Swindon have been affected by flooding caused by the heavy rain from Saturday into Sunday morning.

Flooding between Swindon and Bristol Parkway has led to alterations to services between London Paddington and Cardiff Central.

And trains between Swindon and Chippenham have been cancelled.

On the former alterations for London Paddington and Cardiff, a GWR spokesman said: "Owing to flooding in the Alderton area the line between Swindon and Bristol Parkway is closed.

"Flooding is also affecting the line between Swindon and Chippenham, which is the alternative line we would use when the line between Swindon and Bristol Parkway is closed.

"We can only use one of the two lines on that alternative route so only a very limited train service will be running between London Paddington and South Wales in both directions.

"You are advised not to attempt to travel at this time."

And on the Swindon and Chippenham line, a GWR spokesman added: "Owing to flooding in the Dauntsey area one of the two line between Swindon and Chippenham is closed.

"Flooding is also affecting the alternative routes which we would have used to divert services along.

"A very limited train service will be running between Swindon and Bristol Temple Meads via Chippenham and Bath Spa, in both directions.

"You are advised not to attempt to travel at this time."

Disruption on the former is expected to last until 10am while disruption on the latter could run until at least noon.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for a large part of the south of the UK for heavy rain set to fall over the weekend.

A Met Office spokesperson warned: "Bus and train services will probably be affected with journey times taking longer.

"Spray and flooding on roads will probably make journey times longer.

"Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely."

As of 9.30am on Sunday, the warning still remains in place but has shifted to predominantly the South of England, meaning Swindon and Wiltshire should now be over the worst of it.

The weather service warned motorists to take care. Across the border in Oxfordshire, the A34 has been closed in both directions near Abingdon after a single-vehicle crash caused by flooding.
