Flood alerts in place around Wiltshire as rain forecast

The government has issued 24 alerts and one warning while the Met Office forecasts light rain until 4pm.

The warning relates to the Middle Avon from Salisbury to Ringwood as flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Middle and Lower Hampshire Avon, with low lying land expected to be most affected, particularly around areas in Britford, Charlton All Saints, Downton and Fordingbridge in close proximity to the River Avon.

Maud Heaths Causeway in Chalcutt, near Chippenham and Calne, is currently closed between the Sutton Benger turn off and Foxham turning due to flooding.

Water levels are expected to rise on the River Brue and River Sheppey. Areas most at risk include locations near the River Sheppey in Shepton Mallet and Croscombe,and the B3151 Glastonbury to Meare Road. Overtopping is forecast from the Glastonbury Millstream and the River Brue at North Drain and Westhay.

Other alerts cover the River Thames and its small tributaries from Calcutt to Lechlade, tributaries on the Upper River Thames above Cricklade, the River Wylye, the River Ock from Watchfield to Abingdon, the Letcombe Brook at Wantage, Grove and East Hanney, and the Bristol Avon, Tetbury Avon, Sherston Avon, and Dauntsey Brook. 

Elsewhere, the River Bourne, River Coln, River Churn, River Kennett, River Leach, River Lambourn, and River Ock may also overflow.

There may be groundwater flooding in the Lambourn Valley, Upper Aldbourne Valley, and Upper Og Valley, as well as in Vernham Dean, Upton and the Bourne Valley, and villages around Andover.
