'A bit of Swindon history' hidden from view has been uncovered after 60 years.

For decades the Swindon to Highworth Light Railway, Kingsdown Road B4141 overbridge looking north towards Highworth has been hidden by plant overgrowth and vegetation.

But construction work going on in the area relating to new housing estate has seen all of that overgrowth removed, revealing the historic bridge in all of its glory.

Ian Evans took photos of the bridge and sent them in.

"It’s probably the first time it’s been cleared and visible from the trackbed level since 1962 when the line was closed," he said.

"I believe the bridge is remaining at the moment as it’s been cleared of vegetation alongside to allow construction of a new footpath to bypass the bridge for a new housing estate.

"This is because the road bridge is too narrow for cars and cyclists, its also notorious for accidents because of the blind summit."

Just beyond the bridge the line spurred to the right for the Vickers Armstrong Aircraft factory at South Marston where the Spitfires were produced during the Second World War.
