A new corner shop has opened its doors after replacing a Co-op which had previously been in the premises for more than a century.

Nisa Local opened for the first time on Monday, February 19 on Rodbourne Road.

The Co-op closed its doors on February 3  the building is back in use already - despite there currently being no signage on the outside the building to signal the change in ownership.

A worker at the store told the Adver that the shop is going to close again at the beginning of March for three weeks.

He said the new owners plan on entirely refurbishing the shop, which includes a installing a new sign, replacing freezers and chillers as well as moving the till area.

The shop’s interior is almost identical to the set up of the Co-op as things stand.

Contactors due to be carrying out the work were not available ahead of the opening date.

Hudson Dsouzar, an employee at the new store, explained that the first week had been really positive and that shoppers had been welcoming and friendly.

The 25-year-old said: “So far I am finding it really good, the people are really nice.

“It is going really well, day by day we are getting more sales and more people walking through our door.”

The Co-op is the third to close in Swindon the last few years. The Co-op stores in Gorse Hill and Rodbourne Cheney closed their doors in 2022.

Midcounties Co-operative put the shop on sale, a spokesperson described the closure as a “very difficult decision”.

They said: “It was identified that the Rodbourne Road store no longer fitted with the long-term strategy of the Society.

“Our board therefore took the very difficult decision to place this property on the market and can confirm the site has now found a new owner.

"We look forward to continuing to serve our local communities within Your Co-op Food stores in the local area.”
