Sewage has been dumped into a Swindon river for more than 30 hours since Thursday morning.

A map which "indicates" storm overflows around the Thames Water region, shows a sewage discharge is ongoing into the Liden Brook along Wanborough Road between Wanborough and Covingham.

The sewage discharge started at 4.45am on Thursday, February 29. As of 11am on Friday, the issue is ongoing.

This means sewage has been discharged into the Liden Brook for more than 30 hours since Thursday.

This is the second discharge into the river in just two days after one took place the previous day (Wednesday, February 28) at 5.15am and lasted for at least 6 hours.

The website explains that the Thames Water monitor indicates that storm overflow is discharging, which could include sewage.

A Thames Water spokesperson said: “Taking action to improve the health of our rivers is a key focus for us and we are leading the way with our transparent approach to data.

"We remain the only company to provide live alerts for all untreated discharges and this ‘near real-time’ data is available to customers as a map on our website and is also available through an open data platform for third parties, such as swimming and environmental groups to use.

“We regard any untreated discharges as unacceptable, and we’re committed to stopping them from being necessary, with the assistance of our regulators.

"Storm overflows are designed to operate automatically when the sewer network is about to be overwhelmed which then releases diluted wastewater into rivers, rather than letting it back up into people’s homes.

“We’re currently spending £5million upgrading our Cricklade site to increase its treatment capacity and we have plans to upgrade our Swindon, Blunsdon, Purton and Wanborough sewage works.

“We are working hard to make these discharges unnecessary and have published plans to upgrade over 250 of our sewage treatment works and sewers to treat the high volumes of incoming sewage and reduce the need for overflows during wet weather.”

The water company recently announced plans to make improvements to sewage works near Swindon.

The news was confirmed by a representative on February 14. This comes after residents had raised concerns about untreated sewage discharged in Ampney Brook.

The proposed improvements are expected to begin in September 2025 and aim to increase treatment capacity and reduce untreated discharges.

Representatives at the meeting also shed light on plans for areas such as Fairford, Moreton-in-Marsh, Bourton-on-the-Water and Cirencester.
