Tesco have apologised after temporary portable toilets at a Swindon store were described as "disgusting" by a customer.

Julia Batsford complained after using the portable toilets at Tesco Extra on Ocotal Way.

The customer toilets at the store are currently out of use, with portable toilets located outside of the store instead.

Julia said: “The smell was so bad and got so much up in your nose even when I got home I had to have a shower, I couldn’t get rid of the smell.”

The situation began on Valentine’s Day, when Tesco was forced to apologise for the smell of sewage outside the store after a blocked drainpipe caused the smell.

The issue was reportedly resolved at the time however since then the toilets have been closed for works to be carried out.

Julia, 70, was visiting the store with her family and says she was disgusted by the state of the toilets.

She explained that when entering she found that the lock did not work, there was toilet paper strewn across the toilet and that there was no water or hand sanitiser for her to use to wash her hands.

She also said that there was an awful smell inside the toilets.

Julia’s daughter had to guard the door for her while she used the facilities.

Julia said she went inside to ask for something to be done, but when she finished her shopping, she was disappointed to find that nothing had been done to clean them.

She has now vowed to not return to the store until the problem is resolved.

She said: “There was a mess all over the place, toilet paper everywhere, nothing to wash your hands with, we have just had two years of Covid, surely you don’t have to put up with this kind of thing in this day and age.

“When I sat on the toilet seat I felt so dirty… It was just horrible.

“I won’t shop there again until they sort it out.

“I just couldn’t get it out of my head.”

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We are sorry to hear about this. If a customer experiences any problems with the temporary toilets at our Swindon Extra store, we would encourage them to report them to one of our store team.

"We are working to re-open the in-store customer toilets as soon as possible and apologise for the inconvenience."
