A woman has died and two others have been hospitalised with life-threatening injuries after a horror crash on the M4 in Wiltshire.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident on the M4 westbound, between junctions 15 and 16 near Swindon, at around 11.50am on Saturday, March 9.

The incident happened when a Volvo S40 left the carriageway and crashed into a tree, sparking a significant response from police, and land and air ambulances.

The front seat passenger, a woman in her 60s from Oxford, died at the scene.

The male driver and a female passenger, aged in her 20s, have both been taken to Southmead Hospital in a life-threatening condition.

A third passenger, a male in his 30s, suffered an arm injury in the crash.

The westbound carriageway remained closed for around 11 hours while investigation work was carried out, but reopened shortly before 11pm on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the force added: “Specialist trained officers are supporting the next of kin of those involved and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
