A local church has been left in a 'critical situation' after the need for major repairs to its roof was discovered.

St Paul's Church and community centre in Covingham is now facing potential costs of £30,000 to resolve the matter.

The urgent need for repairs arose from water leakage inside the building, prompting The Dorcan Church Council to initiate a fundraising appeal to help save the public building.

Tony Prichard, the dedicated church treasurer, emphasised that while the building is under the jurisdiction of the Church of England, the responsibility for upkeep falls upon the local congregation.

He said: "St Paul's, an integral part of the community, has served as a venue for countless weddings, receptions, birthday parties, and various community events.

"Additionally, it plays a crucial role in supporting initiatives such as blood donation drives for the NHS, Christenings, and a weekly gathering for senior citizens offering free coffee and fellowship every Tuesday."

He further explained that despite being a central hub for community activities, the annual running costs are barely covered by congregation donations and premises rentals.

While the Church of England and The Methodist Church share the costs of ministers, the local congregation is left to manage the maintenance and upkeep of the building.

"To ensure the continuation of St Paul's as a vital community space, The Dorcan Church Council is reaching out to the local and wider community for support. A fundraising appeal has been launched to gather the necessary funds for the extensive repairs needed," Tony said.

The appeal specifically calls upon individuals, businesses, and organisations to contribute generously, safeguarding the future of St Paul's and its services to the community.

The appeal seeks to raise funds not only for the church itself but also to sustain the various groups and activities that depend on the centre, including Kingfisher Pre School, Tiny Tots, CID’s Café, North Dorcan Senior Citizens, dance groups, exercise classes, birthday and celebration parties, emergency shelter, and NHS Blood donation drives.

Tony added: "Every donation, regardless of size, will make a significant impact in keeping this vital facility open for the people of Swindon."

St Paul's Church was opened in 1971 years after its town centre predecessor was demolished.
