A crash involving three vehicles closed one of the main routes into Swindon town centre for several hours.

A Stagecoach bus, a black BMW convertible, and a grey-blue Ford Kuga collided at the junction of County Road and Manchester Road.

The bus went off the road and smashed through a phone booth near the entrance to Foundation Park.

The BMW appeared to have been carrying large planks of wood in its back seat.

Around six police cars, three ambulances, a paramedic car, and three fire engines rushed to the scene at around 3.15pm, soon joined by a Stagecoach van and Swindon Borough Council officers.

A police cordon stopped pedestrians from getting too close to the junction, with a separate second cordon in place further along Manchester Road, where a queue of other buses had formed.

Curious bystanders gathered nearby, though none the Adver spoke to had witnessed the moment of impact.

Police blocked the entrances to County Road from Transfer Bridges and the Magic Roundabout, causing some traffic issues on the busy junctions.

Firefighters spent the afternoon cutting up parts of the broken BMW and removing the remains of the wrecked phone booth.

All passengers on the bus appear to have been evacuated safely, though many of the windows were smashed in the collision.

The fire engines and ambulances had left the scene by 5pm as tow trucks arrived to winch the cars off each other and any debris from the broken traffic island.

One resident living near the junction reported that his power supply had been cut off since the time of the accident.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "We responded to a road traffic collision, shortly after 3pm on Saturday, March 30, involving a bus and two cars on County Road, Swindon.

"There were no reported serious injuries, although two people have been taken to hospital by ambulance.

"The bus appears to have left the road and damaged a garden wall, an electrical cabinet, and a telephone kiosk.

"Please be aware that County Road in Swindon is currently closed from the Transfer Bridges roundabout to the Magic Roundabout and is likely to remain so for some time.

"Drivers should consider alternative routes and plan for delays in the area.

"Witnesses should contact us on 101 quoting log 223 of March 30."
