Traffic coming in and out of Highworth has been brought to a standstill after Thames Water launched roadworks on a major roundabout.

One worker said that the roadworks, which are centred around The Fox roundabout in Highworth where the A361 meets Swindon Street, were in place to 'upgrade water' in the area.

Workers confirmed that they aimed to complete the works and move away from the roundabout as quickly as possible, but until then four-way temporary traffic lights will continue to cause traffic chaos.

Cars were seen queueing from as far south as the Supermarine Sports Club near South Marston on Easter Monday (April 1) and traffic heading north was brought to 10mph for several hours.

The A361, Swindon Street, the High Street and Cricklade Road are all being affected.

"The queue coming into Highworth was awful, backed up right up the hill and people were doing their usual bit driving through the lights and blocking the roads," said one motorist who was stuck in the Easter Monday traffic.

According to the traffic maintenance site One Network, these roadworks could last until April 14 and are to install a "new service connection."
