A community hall which has stood for 35 years could face permanent closure if more volunteers don't step forward.

Bouverie Hall in Pewsey offers a space for group events, celebrations, meetings, sports classes and more, but current committee members at the hall say that that closure is on the cards.

A lack of volunteers in recent years means that there are now more jobs to be carried out than the small committee team can manage, and they have issued an urgent appeal for volunteers.

"The committee do not want this to happen but the situation is unsustainable with a small committee of volunteers doing several roles to keep the hall open," said a spokesperson for the Bouverie Hall committee.

"The situation needs to change. It would be really nice if people could volunteer to help at events run by the hall or join the committee to spread the roles out to keep the hall going.

"The Bouverie Hall will close if new volunteers do not come forward now to keep the hall running."

Bouverie Hall, on Goddard Road, is named after Mrs Edward Pleydell-Bouverie who visited Pewsey in September 1989 just after the hall first opened. Locals say it took a great deal of effort to get the new hall off the ground after "unavoidable delays" and increasing costs.

The hall accommodates 350 people and now caters for a wide variety of events for the community from arts, music, film and theatre to fitness, dance and craft workshops. It's also used as private hire for weddings and parties.

The space comes with a large fully-fitted commercial-grade kitchen allowing food and a raised stage with fully featured lighting and audio.

Volunteers work to maintain the facilities, clean the hall before and after events, and take bookings, but with the hall proving increasingly popular there are not enough volunteers to keep the place running.

"It would be such a shame to lose this facility," said local resident Lisa Brindley.

"The Bouverie Hall offers a great space for so many people.

"Finding volunteers can be difficult these days and many people don't realise that offering just a few hours a week/month can make a huge difference."
