Swindon may feel like a stressful place at times, but residents can relax in the knowledge that there are 35 even more testing towns and cities in the UK to live.

This comes from new data collated by Deskup, who looked at various traits that can either make a person feel stressed or relate to stress.

Factors such as health issues, anxiety levels, percentage of physical inactivity, drug misuse and crime rates among others were all taken into consideration.

Swindon ranked 36 out of 90 English towns and cities, just slightly more stressful than Exeter, but three places less stressful than Bristol.

Swindon scored low for social environment (low is good), a measure which takes into account unemployment, workplace safety, income and divorces.

Meanwhile, Swindon’s highest, most stressful measure was addiction, accounting for alcohol misuse, drug misuse and smoking rates.

Of major settlements in the south west, Gloucester came out worst ranking fourth in the stress-tables.

Gloucester had a total score of 51.76 compared with Swindon’s 46.47.

The data originally came from the Office for National Statistics.

The least stressful place in England was Doncaster, which earned the lowest stress score of all cities and towns in England, 33.63. Its citizens are faring well in terms of socioeconomic dynamics.

The cities of Walsall and Rochdale follow on the list. They have a positive mental and social environment that allows their citizens to lead quiet lives, earning scores of 33.93 and 34.15 respectively.

York on the other hand, named one of Europe’s most haunted cities, leads the list of the most stressful cities to live in, getting a stress score of 55.25.

But the supernatural occurrences are not the ones stressing citizens out.

Citizens in the area face high unemployment levels and the second lowest disposable household income annually.

These two factors combined help make the city the worst in the country for its socioeconomic environment.

One might expect smaller cities to be amongst the calmest, as many do not like the hustle and bustle of big cities, but that's not the case for Cambridge.

Residents in the city are the least satisfied with their lives, with a score of 6.46 out of 10.

And while you may think the frantic pace of London would incite feelings of anxiousness, it turns out the capital isn't among the top 10 most stressful places to live.

Top 10 most stressful places to live according to Deskup: 1 York, 2 Cambridge, 3 Stafford, 4 Gloucester, 5 Lancaster, 6 Manchester, 7 Worthing, 8 Canterbury, 9 Leeds, 10 Harrogate.
