Wiltshire Air Ambulance has seen one of the rooms at its airbase undergo a makeover.

The family room, a key part of the base located in Semington, found on the ground floor, has received a new lease of life with support from Furniture Box and SXW Carpentry.

The room acts as a hub for patients, visitors and staff and hosts a range of experiences, from meetings with crews post-emergencies to in-memory visits.

It is a place which is away from the busy crew room, providing a secure area for patients keen to understand more about, or relive, their treatment, which can often be challenging or distressing.

Additionally, the family room welcomes the loved ones of those who tragically did not survive, offering them a chance to connect with the charity.

Furniture Box, based in Chippenham, gifted two sofas to the refurbished family room, with staff also volunteering to paint the area.

SXW Carpentry helped with the final elements of the makeover, fitting new skirting boards.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance's Katy Burke said: "The family room is such an important part of the airbase and needed updating to make it a warmer, more welcoming space.

"We are ever so grateful to two local companies, Furniture Box and SXW Carpentry, for the donations they have made, both in terms of products but also their time and effort.

"Our own volunteers also kindly gave time to help with painting, alongside Furniture Box staff."

Ms Burke added: "We were even able to utilise donations kindly made to our Devizes charity shop to build out an area in the family room for youngsters, including toys and games to keep them entertained.

"Everyone at Wiltshire Air Ambulance is so proud of the finished family room, and it was great to be able to welcome back some former patients for the official opening."

Among those attending the opening was Peter Vooght, a former patient who was treated for a life-threatening episode of sleep apnoea in March 2016.

Mr Vooght, from Semington, was anaesthetised and intubated on scene to manage his airway, before being airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

He said: "The new family room is lovely, really nice.

"The colour scheme is great and if I were making a first visit, it would be the perfect setting a returning patient or family member."

Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a charity which was founded in 1990, and operates for up to 19 hours a day.
