Construction is underway for a new section of canal that will run through part of Swindon.
The Wilts and Berks Canal Trust announced on Saturday that the next phase of development for the waterway through Middle Wichel in South Swindon has begun.
This current extension being built by the Wichelstowe Joint Venture between Swindon Borough Council and developer Barratt David Wilson Homes takes the canal further from Foxham Way, up to Mill Lane.
Swindon branch chair Chloe Ford said: “This is a very great moment for Swindon and the trust going forward, as we see the next stretch of build take shape.
“This is the next step towards linking the two Wichelstowe sections, which will vastly benefit the local community and the ecological benefits that come with the canal.
“The linking of the two sections by the Wichelstowe Joint Venture will see good progress in the next few years, as we see more canal construction, plus two road bridges and one swing bridge constructed.
“This is a big scale project and it is now in full motion."
