YOUNG footballers will tackle their elders in a special football tournament designed to break down barriers and negative perceptions of teenagers.

The competition, which has been dubbed the Best of the West Tournament, kicks off on Saturday at The Link Centre from 10am to 5pm.

Young people aged between 13 and 19 will pit their talents against a range of adult teams, including local parents, Wiltshire Police, Arval, Wiltshire Fire Service, Link centre, Tenpin, Greendown School teachers and Fitness First.

The teenagers, who have already been sharpening their football skills in free weekly practice sessions in the run up to the event, will be competing for a trophy and other prizes, which will be handed out by Swindon Mayor Steve Wakefield.

The event has been organised by Swindon Council’s Youth Service and West Swindon’s Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and the £2,600 cost is being funded by the Youth Opportunity Fund, local sponsorship and support from local businesses.

Coun Garry Perkins, cabinet member for children’s services, which includes the Youth Service, said: “I would urge everyone with a spare few hours on Saturday to attend this worthwhile and fun event.

“It is a chance to unite the whole community and dispel any myths associated with young people in Swindon. The teenagers involved should be very proud of their efforts in helping to make this event happen.”

Other attractions on the day include a barbecue, Boombox mobile music centre and a raffle.

PSCO Richard Lane said: “I think the young people love the fact that they will be playing against the local police. This is a great partnership between the police, youth service and Swindon Town Football Club.

“This will lead to regular football for youths on Friday evenings at the Link Centre through Twilight football. The response to the event has been great and all places for the tournament were taken very quickly. Local businesses have been very generous with prizes for a raffle on the day.”

There will be 16 teams and 12 matches in total with the final kicking off at 3.15pm. All members of the public are welcome to attend. Entry is free.
