EMPLOYEES who safeguard the future of cancer research are now determined to do their own bit for a cancer charity.

Six women are taking part in the Marie Curie Ladies Driving Challenge at Azimghur Barracks in Colerne tomorrow, which involves driving lots of different vehicles for the day with no training.

Susan Willis, Claire Belcher, Susan Peachey, Dawn Marie Peachey, Tracey Peachey and Becky Eldridge are all from either the Medical Research Council (MRC), based at North Star House, North Star Avenue, or the nearby Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Susan Willis, of the MRC, said: “I did it partly because I lost my dad to cancer and my friend lost her mother and I know they were reliant on nurses so I think it’s excellent that people can choose where they want to end their life, but we have all got their own cause.”

The MRC is responsible for co-ordinating scientific research, which involves ordering drugs and scientific equipment and financing projects so this was also a factor in the charity chosen.

Money was raised through various methods including a raffle and dress down day as well as the upcoming challenge.

Particular thanks from the women go to the local businesses including Arkells Brewery who donated some beer, Pentel for a pen set and there were also some tickets for Longleat and the Midlands Safari Park.
