ROAD closures in Swindon will cause frustration for motorists on the A419 and M4.

The Highways Agency has said it will close the northbound carriageway tonight for resurfacing work.

The busy road will be shut between 8pm tonight and 6am tomorrow morning.

Motorists wishing to travel north on the A419 are advised to go from the Commonhead Roundabout and take the A4259 Marlborough Road.

They should then travel onto Queens Drive, Drake’s Way and Oxford Road to join the A419 northbound at the A420 White Hart Roundabout.

Highways Agency spokesman Robin Miller said: “It will be closed for a few hours while resurfacing work can be carried out.

“We don’t predict any major delays. The road will be closed overnight during a quiet period.”

In another closure this weekend more than 33,000 vehicles are likely be diverted through Swindon when the M4 motorway is closed so a bridge can be demolished.

The South Leaze bridge over the M4 between the two Swindon junctions – 15 and 16 – will come down.

The motorway will be closed in both directions and the closure could see 33,501 vehicles travelling through the town.

It will be closed from 7pm tomorrow, until 10am on Sunday.

“This work will take place a day later,” added Robin.

“It will involve a considerable amount of work on a busier road over a longer period. Traffic will be diverted when it dies down.”

The existing structure was built in 1971 and is coming to the end of its life.

Following the demolition this month, construction work on the replacement bridge will start in January in conjunction with maintenance work on the nearby Spittleborough Bridge.

The work will be a repeat of the demolition and replacement of Blackhorse Bridge last year.

The £1.4m footbridge, near the Croft Road bridge, links Swindon to Wroughton.

It was demolished in June 2007 because it restricted use of the hard shoulder.

The new bridge allowed the hard shoulder to be used by all vehicles for emergencies and for road maintenance.

When the overnight closures are in place diversions will be in place on the M4 this weekend. The Highways Agency are advising westbound traffic to leave the M4 at Junction 15, take the A419 to the Commonhead Roundabout, the A4259, A4312, B4289, B4006 and A3102 to rejoin at Junction 16. Eastbound traffic will leave at Junction 16 and follow the same diversion in the opposite direction.
