CANCER battler Sam Holland is spending her time recovering from the disease helping others.

Thoughtful Sam, 23, of Old Town, is doing voluntary work for Cancer Research UK.

Sam, who is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a rare cancer which affects about 150 young adults in the UK each year, is working for the charity in London.

Her 12-week internship will see her help the charity, and its work, in all kinds of ways.

She said: “I will be working on a wide variety of things, including updating internet pages and helping with training sessions. I am really pleased.

“Keeping busy has helped me to stay positive through some very challenging times.”

The former Commonweal and New College student was diagnosed with cancer in June last year as she was planning to go travelling for a month through Vietnam and Cambodia.

She had just completed a law conversion course in Manchester and wanted to travel to fill in time before she was due to undertake a follow-up vocational training course at the end of August in London to practice law.

Tests confirmed she was suffering from a lymphoma and she was referred to a consultant haematologist.

Six months of intensive chemotherapy treatment finished just three days before Christmas.

A recent scan confirmed her recovery is progressing well but she will have three-monthly check-ups for the foreseeable future.

The law graduate is due to take up a Legal Practice Course in London in September to complete her solicitor training.

Maria Gomez, Cancer Research UK’s area volunteer manager for Swindon, said: “We are so grateful for the time and support offered by volunteers such as Sam.

“By actively promoting our fundraising activities and campaigns, Sam has encouraged more people in the Swindon area to get involved and raise vital funds to help us beat cancer.”
