THIRTEEN jobs have been lost in Swindon as High Street giant Zavvi closed its town centre branch.

DVD and CD chain Zavvi – which was Virgin Megastore until September 2007 – said yesterday the Brunel Centre shop was one of 17 UK stores that was shutting.

Joint administrators Ernst & Young LLP will continue to keep open the remaining 31 stores throughout the country.

It is not the first blow for Zavvi in Swindon – the Designer Outlet branch was closed last month.

The joint administrators say they will work with the insolvency service’s Redundancy Payment Office and Job Centre Plus to provide support and advice to all employees made redundant.

Joint administrator Tom Jack said: “We will continue to trade in the remaining 31 UK stores and remain hopeful that a sale of some or all of these stores can be achieved.

“We are in detailed discussions with two interested parties and it is our intention to continue to trade all remaining UK stores with a view to their sale as a going concern.

“We are extremely grateful to the staff and management at all stores and the head office for their fantastic support throughout this difficult time.

“We would like to thank JobCentre Plus and the Redundancy Payments Office for their continued support in this matter.”

Zavvi went into administration on Christmas Eve after it was crippled by the collapse of Woolworths’ Entertainment UK wholesaling division.

EUK was the company's main supplier and its demise left Zavvi unable to take customer orders.

The closure follows the folding of popular High Street store Woolworths. Its Regent Street shop shut at the beginning of the year.

Not everyone was surprised by Zavvi’s demise.

Shop assistant Mark Hopkins, from Rodbourne, 21, said: “I'm a music producer myself and I think that these big music stores have dug their own grave.

“It only costs £1 to make a CD, so charging the punters £10 or more is a rip-off.

“The whole music industry is becoming internet-based.”

Zavvi stores have closed in Aberdeen, Blackpool, Camberley, Carlisle, Chester, Coventry, Denton, Derby, Harlow, Hemel Hempstead, Hereford, Loughborough, Meadowhall in Sheffield, Shrewsbury, Walton On Thames and York.
