ROYAL Mail has apologised for delays to service caused by dangerous roads and pathways.

It claimed the decision to cut service had been made on the grounds of the safety of its staff.

Services in Swindon have been disrupted with some people reporting a wait of 10 days so far waiting for parcels.

Mike Dalton, spokesperson for Royal Mail, said the postal service was doing its best, but had seen several days of disruption.

Currently deliveries are limited to the town centre areas and bigger urban parts were routes were passable.

"The situation is as you can imagine there been minimal deliveries made today and where the deliveries have been made they have only been made where that route have been cleared and where the grit has been laid," said Mr Dalton.

Mr Dalton thought 10 days seemed excessive, but said some delays were inevitable.

"This is common sense," he said.

"You are not going to send people out if it's going to be dangerous.

"I don't think we're any different from any other service that relies on deliveries or any manpower service.

"It's a case of managers using discretion.

"We'd apologise, but we would think people would bear with us during adverse weather conditions.

"The number one priority is for us is not to put our people at risk and we absolutely won't do that."
