ASPIRING youngsters will be given the opportunity to find out what life is like as a professional footballer.

Swindon Town FC’s Study Centre will be handing 50 eight to 13-year- olds a chance to take part in two three-day courses over the summer holidays.

The courses will see them experience at first hand the daily routine of a football star.

The scheme, which will take place from July 27 to 30 and from August 10 to 13, was announced yesterday at the County Ground after the study centre was given a £9,500 grant by the National Lottery to launch the programme.

The scheme is aimed at young people who are sporty, work hard at school and would not otherwise be able to afford a similar course.

John Holloway, STFC’s football in the community manager and former Town player, said: “This is a great chance for the kids to enhance their self confidence, fitness and learn loads about team work.

“Football is the best sport to use as a vehicle to drive a message through to kids.

“This is about giving young people an insight into a week at a pro football club.

“We have already had applications. I am looking forward to meeting all the kids and working hard with them throughout.”

During the camp, youth footballers will be completing a video of the weekend, taking part in basketball training with a professional coach, and in football coaching lessons and a fitness test.

Study Centre manager Martin Turnbull said the course will be an opportunity for Swindon Leisure Service, located in the County Ground, Football In The Community and the study centre, where the children will be making a video of their training, to work together.

He said: “This is excellent because they will get expertise from coaches in a range of different sports.

“There will be a fitness test and the chance to see how a pro football club works behind the scenes.

“They will have a great time but also be given insight into a potential career in football in the community and other sports.”
