The election of the German parliament - a mixture of direct and list election - has had good and bad results for Salzgitter.

The city had two members of parliament in the last four years: one politician of the Christian Democrats (CDU), the other of the Social Democrats (SPD).

The first lost his mandate, which he got 2005 through the list election.

The winner of the direct election in Salzgitter is Sigmar Gabriel, the environment minister of the former German government.

The SPD lost many, many votes and is in the opposition now. Therefore Gabriel will loose his secretary job.

Salzgitters mayor Frank Klingebiel fears that the city will have less influence in Berlin.

But Gabriel is looking forward to become the new leader of the german SPD.

Then he will be mighty again, which is an advantage for Salzgitter.
