THE extension to a Cricklade school has been officially opened by a teacher’s celebrity niece.

ITV News at Ten presenter Julie Etchingham cut the ribbon at Prior Park Preparatory School’s new pre-prep department yesterday.

Julie’s aunt Sylvia Bird is the department’s head and when the call came through the newsreader had no hesitation in accepting.

“I love this area,” she said. “I used to come here when I was younger and I have very fond memories of it.

“It’s absolutely beautiful around here and there’s a great sense of community.”

The new department houses children from the reception, year one and year two classes in a building adjacent to the existing prep school.

Julie, 39, said: “It’s a fabulous building and will give the children the absolute best start in life. I’ve been made to feel really welcome by the staff and the children.”

Julie said opening the building, which has been in use since September, was a cut above the last job her aunt roped her into.

She said: “The last time I opened the new loos – so I’m just wondering what’s coming next.”

Before the official unveiling Julie and other guests were entertained by the children, who performed a series of dances and songs.

“It was lovely,” she said. “I have a six and a three-year-old so I know all about this age group and I think they’ll be very happy here.”

Six-year-old Luca Railton got the chance to meet the newsreader and said she was “very nice”.

He said: “I like the new building, especially my classroom. The opening was fun.”

Mrs Bird said: “I’m delighted that Julie was able to come and open the pre-prep department.

“We’re very proud of the building and are always happy to show it off.”

Facilities of the department, which is surrounded by a garden, include a new library, soft play area and interactive whiteboards.

Coun Rex Barnett, Swindon’s deputy mayor, was also present at the opening.

He said: “What a wonderful display the children put on – I thought it was really nice. The building looks great and I thought Julie gave a very nice speech when she opened it.”
