After a shopping expedition to Swindon my daughter suggested we try an eat-as-much-as-you-like oriental restaurant.

She had already visited with friends and had raved about the value.

I wasn’t too sure about the idea and expected a bit of a down-at-heel back street Chinese eatery where quantity was put far ahead of quality.

But I could not have been more wrong. Cosmo is as modern a building as you can get with a contemporary style and food of the highest quality. And when it comes to choice even the pickiest of eaters would have no reason to moan.

The place is huge but tastefully designed so the dining area does not feel cavernous.

We visited at about 7.30pm on a Monday and the place was busy but the incredibly efficient staff had us seated and drinks orders taken with a couple of minutes.

There was some confusion at this point as, after ordering a diet coke and a bottle of beer, the waiter told us there was a special offer and the wine was free. Transferring from beer to wine proved a little tricky but was done with lots of smiles.

I was glad Francesca had visited before and explained the etiquette of dining. Basically because you can return as many times as you like and there is so much choice you are best to only put a small amount on your plate at any one time and try out lots of different dishes.

The vast army of staff whisk away any used plates almost as soon as you put down your fork or chop sticks. The amount of washing up this causes did not bear thinking about.

The restaurant describes its food as Pan Asian and includes dishes from China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, Singapore, Mongolia, India and Vietnam.

Judging by the number of men in suits at tables it is obviously a favourite with the managers from nearby Honda.

My favourites were the teppanyaki hotplate and barbecue grill where expert chefs cook your food to order. I had an incredibly tasty king prawn kebab. Another time I would by-pass the scores of ready prepared buffet dishes and head straight for this.

For anyone who has a good appettite, and plenty of people on nearby tables appeared to do so, there are also an incredible array of puddings available, included in the same price. These include a chocolate fountain.

Our bill came to just under £27 for two.
