cystic fibrosis sufferer Danielle Fuller could be forgiven for thinking only of herself but she was thinking of the sick children she could help when she baked dozens of cakes for the Have A Heart Appeal.

The 14-year-old from Toothill, West Swindon was joined by Heart FMs Greenie and Jez for a charity bake sale at Great Western Hospital on Friday.

Danielle, was among a group of young regular patients, who baked muffins, biscuits and cakes for the appeal, which aims to raise money for computer equipment and resources for children in hospital.

She said: “I have to come into the hospital a lot with my CF and even though the teachers here always try and make each visit fun for me, it can be boring.

“Baking the cakes is great fun and the money will go to help children that are in hospital a lot more than me.”

This year Have A Heart is working with Starlight Children’s Foundation to raise money to change the lives of children in hospitals and hospices in Wiltshire, including GWH.

Heart FM presenter Greenie said: “The nurses and the kids on the children’s ward have done a wonderful job of baking up a storm to support Have A Heart.

“This year we have joined with the Starlight Children’s Foundation to support kids in hospital so getting the in-patients here involved was a really good idea.”

GWH has between eight and ten children on the children’s ward at any one time, with hospital-based teachers Sarah Frame and Andrea Honey and play specialist Clair Parks on hand to help young patients keep on top of their schoolwork and take their minds off their condition.

Andrea said: “We often do baking on a Friday anyway and when the smell wafts down the hallway we soon have doctors and nurses coming in to taste the wares.

“It is nice to teach the children how to cook and we always create everything in laboratory conditions.

“This event was really fun and it was great to take the children’s minds of why they are in hospital - even if it is just for a while.”
