LOW rainfall could mean Thames Water customers face water restrictions later this year.

Figures released by the water company show that January only saw 20 millimetres of rain, a third less than was expected.

It continues a 15-month drought across south east England.

Since the start of November 2004, the area has only had 66 per cent of the expected rainfall.

They are now urging all their customers to help conserve water.

Andy Lovatt, Thames Water's drought manager said: "Without heavy rain in February and March, we may well have to consider some form of restriction, something we have not done for 16 years.

"We are continuing to work hard to reduce leakage, and would like to ask our customers to think carefully about their water use."

People are being asked to use a bucket instead of hoses when washing the car and to make sure they have a full load before using the washing machine.

A device to place in your toilet cistern to reduce the amount used per flush is also available.
