A GARISH' sign is causing controversy in Wootton Bassett.
The new £2.2m Sainsbury's, on the former Budgens site in the Borough Fields is scheduled to open next Thursday.
But one of the signposts the company wants to put up has been given the thumbs down by members of the town council's planning committee.
Mayor Chris Wannell, pictured, said: "Councillors objected to the white background of a sign facing towards Dauntsey Vale.
"They took the view that the background made the sign very garish. It was a majority decision."
The matter will be resolved by North Wiltshire District Council.
