THE Swindon branch of a group campaigning against ID cards has called on local MPs to query figures on identity fraud.

The House of Commons is due to vote on the ID Card Bill on Monday, following amendments to the bill in the House of Lords.

Lynda Warren, of the NO2ID group, believes the Government has exaggerated the cost of identity fraud to give weight to the argument in favour.

She said: "The Home Office claims that identity fraud costs £1.7billion per year but the true figure is well less than one third of that amount.

"The Home Office is scrambling now to deflect a large Commons rebellion.

"The people don't want it, the Lords don't want it and our MPs must listen to their constituents as well as their consciences."

Both of Swindon's MPs, Anne Snelgrove and Michael Wills, back the bill.

Mrs Snelgrove, who represents the South Swindon, said she made it clear during the election that she thought identity cards were a good idea.
