DRIVERS are being warned that they could be stopped unless they keep their registrations details up to date.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has teamed up with the police to encourage drivers to keep their driving licence and vehicle details current.

Earlier this month the Advertiser reported on Swindon police using Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to check each vehicle that passed on the motorway against a national police database in a matter of seconds.

The van-mounted computer scans the number plate and checks to see if it is connected to any crime.

Up to 8,000 vehicles are checked every day and Swindon police can tell if a car is untaxed or the DVLA does not details of the registered keeper using the new system.

A spokesman for the DVLA said: "If the details are inaccurate or have not been updated the vehicle may be flagged against these databases and stopped by police.

"This causes inconvenience to the police and the driver who is stopped.

"By simply making sure that details are correct this can be easily avoided."

Inspector Ian Partington, of Wiltshire Police, said: "If the law-abiding public makes sure their details are correct we can concentrate on catching the criminals."
