SWINDON'S Sikh community will have a choice of where to worship when a new temple opens on Sunday.
The Mayor of Swindon, Ray Fisher, will officially open Prabh Milnae Kaa Chaao Gurdwara Sikh Temple in Deacon Street, following two months' of hard work by the Sikh community.
The building was formerly the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints and was bought from the Mormon community last year.
And, after raising £300,000 to buy and renovate the premises, the dream of hundreds of Sikhs is about to be realised.
"It used to be a Mormon church and it has been empty for almost a year," said Dr Joginder Singh, who has been heavily involved in the project. "We have completely renovated the place thanks to the generous donations from the Sikh community in Swindon and outside the town.
The new temple will be the second of its kind in Swindon, following the opening of the Shri Guru Nanak Gurdwara Temple in Kembrey Street in 2002.
Everyone is invited to Sunday's opening ceremony, at 11am, which will feature an opening prayer, speeches and traditional food.
