A LAMBRINI drinker has been warned he could face prison after breaking into a carpet shop and stealing a camera.

Swindon magistrates heard that Paul Randall, of High Street, Wootton Bassett, had drunk two bottles of the sweet sparkling Italian wine and several bottles of beer in the Town Gardens before making his way home.

But en route he stopped off and broke into GH Frith on the Blagrove industrial estate.

He was caught red-handed by police after an alarm went off. When he appeared at court this week he pleaded guilty to the burglary on Monday night.

The 33-year-old admitted stealing a camera and a satellite navigation system worth £1,100 from the rug and carpet outlet store on Monday night.

The court heard that Randall got into the store by throwing a brick through a window, which set off the alarm, and alerted the police and a member of staff from the shop who was at home.

Jayne Davis, prosecuting, told the court that Randall had stolen the electronic equipment from a cupboard in the premises and was caught by the store owner shortly after 7pm.

She said: "The police searched the store and found the defendant outside the store.

"He said to the officer What is going on? I heard the alarm system and thought I would check it out'.

"But the key holder confirmed he was the man he had seen before and the defendant admitted the burglary."

The court heard that Randall spent four months in prison after committing a similar offence in December 2004.

But Rob Ross, defending, asked the court to prepare reports on Randall before sentencing him.

He said: "Over the last three years when he has come before a court he has invariably been sent to prison.

"He has, over the years, been seen by a variety of people and back in 1994 was diagnosed as having a personality disorder.

"He has often used drink and drugs. He is, however, in a fairly stable relationship. He has a wife and a child.

"He has been out of prison for four months and this offence appears to have happened on the spur of the moment.

"It seems to me we have the chance to consider a non-custodial sentence for the first time in a long time."

Randall was remanded in custody and will reappear before Swindon Magistrates for sentencing on March 1.
