BOYS revealed their thoughts on Swindon in their own magazine.

Pupils from six primary schools worked for over two months to produce the literature entitled ‘What Does Swindon Mean to Me?’, which was designed to stimulate their creativity and improve their literacy skills.

They were at Nova Hreod School, who hosted the scheme, to see the finished product.

Katie Broadbent, English teacher at Nova Hreod, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to be inspired and engaged with different styles of writing.”

The magazine was part of a project called ‘Narrowing the Gap’, which was funded by St Francis Primary School, in Taw Hill, and involved 36 Year Six boys from schools across the town.

They were St Francis Primary School, Ferndale Primary School, Haydon Wick Primary School, Abbey Meads Primary School, Orchid Vale Primary School and Bridlewood Primary School.

The idea was to raise achievement in boy’s writing and engage them in different styles of writing.

Over a period of two months pupils were given talks by journalists to inspire them, then researched and wrote pieces which were then passed to other schools who checked them through.

Articles included in the magazine were on famous people who have lived in Swindon, feature pieces on places to go for leisure activities in the area and poetry the boys wrote on the town.

Two weeks ago the children got together at Nova Hreod School to see the final result, which was printed and put together by staff and students at the secondary school.

Miss Broadbent said: “I was surprised, even in Year Six they were very creative and imaginative and they all worked well as teams even when working with people from a different school.

“The children had a fantastic time.”
