A REUNION for former members of the Penhill Swan Majorettes will be held at the Deer’s Leap pub in Penhill on Saturday, March 12 from 2pm to 4pm.

The event at the venue in Penhill Drive is a chance for people to share memories and old photos with their old friends, including the group’s founder Bill Gulliver.

Penhill Swan Majorettes was established in 1978 by Penhill resident Bill, who had already set up the Youth Community Council which ran weekly discos in the John Moulton Hall He returned from a holiday in South Wales with photos of a majorettes group and he showed it to the children on the council, who said they wanted to give it a go.

The troupe’s first performance was outside the John Moulton Hall with just six girls. The costumes where made by a parent and the girls taught themselves.

They worked hard not only learning the moves and winning competitions but by raising money for the outfits, transport, instruments and other necessaries.

The Penhill Swan Majorettes won several trophies and grew to more than 200 people, several of whom still live in Penhill. The group was disbanded in the 1990s.

Former members can just turn up to the reunion but if they have any photos to display, they should let the organisers know in advance by calling 07815 935876.
