A Swindon College apprentice has praised the scheme for changing his life, as part of a national celebration this week.

Alec Stanton, 25, was made redundant last year but started as a wood occupations apprentice at Sashes and Shutters, near Wootton Bassett, after he saw an advert two months later.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, he has spoken about his experience on the Swindon College scheme to encourage more people to take up apprenticeships.

“It’s brilliant and everything I expected and more. It has helped me loads because I am learning so much that I wouldn’t be learning on the job. I am now doing what I enjoy which is great,” he said.

When Alec started he cycled 20 miles every day to get from Abbey Meads to work.

“I did it because I had to, work was a priority I had to work and provide for my family so it was a case of needs must,” he said.

“I moved to Gloucester in September to be closer to the family when my wife fell pregnant and I saved up to get the moped to travel from there,” he said. Marie Sneddon, apprenticeship manager at Swindon College, said that Alec has shown huge dedication.

“He says it has changed his life. I think apprenticeships are important to give young people the opportunity to train and give them real work experience,” she said.

“I have 500 people here who are all employed so they are learning and earning at the same time and that is priceless,” she said.

Swindon College has apprenticeships available in accounting, bricklaying, business administration, carpentry, electrical installation, engineering, hairdressing, hospitality services, motor vehicle, painting and decorating, plumbing and professional cookery.
