IT MAY not be as popular as Paris and Rome for loved-up couples to run away to, but Swindon is in fact one of the most romantic places in the UK.
The town’s big heart and rather soppy side was revealed this weekend by BT which, in the run up to Valentine’s Day, arranged for people to be able to tweet, text or e-mail messages of love to the giant London 2012 Live Site screen at Wharf Green.
And surprisingly, the live site emerged as one of the most popular in the country, with approximately 100 messages of love screened, as well as at least 10 proposals of marriage.
BT spokesman Jason Mann said: “It was a fantastic response from local people.
“It just goes to show that romance is very much alive and well in Swindon.”
Seventeen live sites took part in the initiative around the country, including Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester and Plymouth.
The initiatives were run in partnership with London 2012, the BBC and local authorities.
