A NEW area of woodland has been created thanks to a home furnishing store and an environmental charity.

The 5.4 acre wood has been planted at the Woodland Trust’s Stratton Wood, off Hyde Road, thanks to money raised by Ikea customers. The money has been raised through customer swipes of the Ikea family card in stores. A 10p donation is made every time the card is swiped – enough to create a square foot of woodland.

Sue Holden, chief executive of the Woodland Trust, said: “I am delighted that through Ikea’s support Swindon has benefitted by having a new woodland created in your area.

“The woodland created through Ikea’s funding will be enjoyed by people of all ages, help wildlife thrive, combat climate change and improve our environment. Through your help the trust is one step closer to realising our long term vision of doubling native woodland cover in the UK.”

In total Ikea UK’s Foot of Forest campaign has raised £1m for the Woodland Trust which has enabled it to create 230 acres of new native woodland – about the same size as the Olympic Village in London.
