The latest craze among young ones this half term is baking, decorating and tucking in to cup cakes.

At the Steam railway museum in Rodbourne on Tuesday, more than 400 children were right on track with some creative ways of decorating their cakes.

The workshops were run by Steam and the Cupcake Passion Company, based at Studley Grange Craft Village, Wroughton.

Hellen Barnes, marketing and public relations officer for Steam, said: “We had a very busy day and the children taking part got really involved and created some amazing cakes.’’ The Cupcake Passion Company baked about 500 cakes for the youngsters to decorate but the most popular was undoubtedly chocolate. “It would certainly seem so with all the chocolate round their faces and the big smiles,’’ said Hellen.

Each child chose their own favourite from chocolate, lemon, strawberry, coffee or vanilla and they were given some expert advice on how to decorate the cakes. The families all joined in.

“You could tell they were really enjoying creating their own designs with the piped icing, sparkly sprinkles and cut-out iced shapes. The day was a definite success,’’ said Hellen.

More half term events at Steam include an Odd One Out Trail, the Smiley Cats Kids Club and a Meet The Railway Workers event. For more details call 01793 466637 or visit www.swindon.gov.uk/steam.
