EARLY risers in the town centre will be in for a treat tomorrow when a special showing of the 1961 space mission is screened.

To coincide with the exact time Yuri Gagarin’s original space mission first took place in 1961, the film – First Orbit – will be shown on the Big Screen in Wharf Green at 7.07am.

Swindon is one of just 17 locations in the country where the special 50th anniversary film will be screened.

The film weaves historic audio recordings of the first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, with new footage of his orbital route.

Director Chris Riley said: “We have woven historic Vostok I mission recordings of Gagarin – subtitled in English – with new shots captured by Paolo Nespoli, and edited them to an original score by composer Philip Sheppard, creating a spellbinding film “I’m thrilled to be able to share it with people around the world for free on this historic anniversary.”

The movie will then be screened again at 12.30pm for those unable to see it in the morning.
