THERE was a clash of the titans when Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham jammed with Swindon Council’s chief executive.

Gavin Jones took to the stage of the Meca, in Regent Circus, with Scott Gorham, lead guitarist and singer of rockers Thin Lizzy for a one-off jam session in the lead up to the band’s gig there.

Gavin, 50, has played guitar since the age of 16 and is a huge Thin Lizzy fan.

He said: “Scott is one of my heroes and I think it is brilliant that they are coming to Swindon.

“I followed them all over the country back in the day so it is incredible to have the chance to perform together.

“I hope lots of Swindon people turn out to see such a great band like Thin Lizzy, it is going to be an amazing night.”

The pair performed Thin Lizzy’s 1976 hit song Jailbreak, the performance was aired on BBC Wiltshire.

And Gavin, who is part of the Graham Mack Rock Band, is hoping this is not the end of his relationship with the Thin Lizzy star.

“We are still trying to negotiate a supporting slot, there’s a new band emerging here,” he joked.

“I have really enjoyed myself, Scott is a real gentleman, it was really fantastic.

“I was a bit tense before performing.

“I do lots of challenging things in my job, but this was definitely out of my comfort zone.”

And Scott was full of praise for his jammin’ partner too.

He said: “There’s no way I could do his job, not with all the early mornings. He was amazing, he never hit a bad note.”

The band will play their only UK headline date in Swindon on June 2, featuring founder member Brian Downey, Scott and Darren Wharton, who both joined the band in the 1970s.

Joining them will be bassist Marco Mendoza of Whitesnake, The Almighty’s Ricky Warwick on vocals and guitar, and Richard Fortus from Guns ‘n’ Roses.

Meca owner Steve Causer said: “We are really looking forward to it – it is not often you get such big names in the music scene on stage at one time and it is never going to happen again in Swindon, so it is going to be a great night.
