A MAN who carjacked a motorist as he sat on his own drive after getting home from work has been jailed for two years and eight months.

James Howells, 26, punched and threatened the driver in the drunken attack outside the victim’s home.

Howells’ brother Andrew, 28, then drove the pair away from the scene despite being banned from the road and almost three times over the drink-drive limit.

A few hours later he then led police on a high speed chase which saw £7,000 worth of damage done to the Seat Leon.

He went the wrong side of bollards while overtaking the car then smashed through a wooden fence on to playing fields before the brothers fled from the car.

Tessa Hingston, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court the victim had pulled up outside his home in West Swindon shortly before 6pm on Wednesday, January 12.

He was sitting in his company car filling out a mileage sheet when the door opened and one man rained punches on him, demanding he hand over the keys.

The other man hit him and the car with a bottle.

The victim managed to get out of the car but dropped the keys and the pair jumped in and drove off.

About three hours later police in Chippenham saw the vehicle being driven on Lords Mead.

It turned on to Hungerdown Lane going towards Bristol Road where it overtook other cars, passing the wrong side of keep left signs.

The officers put on their lights and sirens but the car carried on being driven at speed on Bristol Road and Hardenhuish Lane.

After turning on to a private road the car stopped, then accelerated through a wooden fence smashing through on to playing fields.

The police followed as the car was driven across the grass. The two men leapt from the vehicle before it crashed into bushes.

Though James Howells managed to get away Anthony Howells was caught and found to have an iPod, a mobile, a sat nav and bank cards taken from the car in his pockets.

He was taken to the police station and found to be almost three times over the drink drive limit.

James Howells, of Marney Road, Grange Park, Swindon, admitted to robbery, aggravated taking without consent by being carried in the vehicle.

Anthony Howells, of Woodlands Road, Chippenham, admitted aggravated taking without consent, driving while disqualified, drink driving, and no insurance.

The offences put him in breach of a suspended sentence.

The court heard that James Howells was picked out by the victim in an ID parade. Anthony Howells was not.

Rob Ross, defending James Howells, said his client had not been arrested at the scene but handed himself in soon after.

He said he was extremely drunk at the time of the offence and sorry for what he did, though he insisted he had not used the bottle.

Jason Taylor, defending Anthony Howells, said his client was to be sentence for the lesser offences relating to driving, not the robbery.

Jailing them Judge Euan Ambrose said “This was not breaking into a car in a car park in the dead of night and going for a joyride.”

He imposed a two years and eight months sentence on James and banned him from driving for a year.

Andrew Howells received a 17-month jail term and was banned from driving for three years and until he has passed an extended retest
