A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with murder after a man was stabbed to death close to the town centre.

Shortly before 9.30pm on Friday evening police were called to reports of a man having been seriously assaulted in Manchester Road following an altercation with other men.

Officers and ambulance crews attended the location and administered first aid but the victim, a 40 year old man from the local area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A short time later a 22 year old man and a 23 year old man, both from the local area were arrested on suspicion of murder.

In the early hours of this morning, Edino Carvalho,23, of Plymouth Street,was charged with murder. He has been remanded in custody to appear at Swindon Magistrates Court tomorrow.

The 22 year man who was also arrested has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Superintendent Sean Memory who is leading the investigation said: "I would like to thank all those who have been assisting us with our investigation so far and especially the local community for their understanding and support whilst our enquiries have been ongoing in the area.

"Serious crimes like this one can have a far reaching affect on those communities directly involved but we believe this was very much an isolated incident. We understand those involved knew each other and we are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
