THE race for the Division One title in the Swindon Sunday League intensified at the weekend as three of the top five won their games.

Leaders Royal Wootton Bassett Town Sunday inflicted Greyhound’s second 2-1 defeat in as many weeks to continue their position at the summit.

Lewis Petrie scored twice to ensure Bassett’s three-point gap to Penhill United remained intact.

United kept up the pressure, though, with a 4-2 win at Highworth Town Sunday. Dan Drewett and Ellis Whittengham netted for the hosts.

Croft Junior bounced back from a loss last time out with a 4-2 win over Woodlands Edge. Alex Baker scored a brace, while Sam Matthews and Joe Hiscock also struck for Croft.

In Division Two, Cricklade Park Rangers and Rudis played their part in a seven-goal thriller that was won by the home side. Second-placed Rangers won their 10th game of the season thanks to a 4-3 victory over inconsistent Rudis.

Gorse Hill Borough picked up their third win of the season as they breezed past Smart Movers 4-1. James Relen scored twice, with Josh Stott and substitute Ashley Ward completing Borough’s tally. Josh Brown got Smart Movers’ reply.

In Division Three, Openwork United lost a potentially title-deciding game at home to Gustoso. David Coleman and Kalum Youngsam both scored doubles, with one from Isiah Jackson capping off the scoring in Gustoso’s 5-0 win.

SWR significantly improved their goal difference with a 10-0 win over The Abbey Mead. Jim Horwood scored a hat-trick, Sean O’Brien and Lee Toomey both netted doubles, while strikes from Chester Dolisznyj, Callum Endicott and Tatenda Majoni completed the scoring.

Elsewhere, Nationwide put up seven against Swindon Rovers – Michael Harris led the way with three goals, Andrew Goodchild got two and both Sean Creeley and David Murray also scored.

Sevenfields United edged past Swindon Saracens 2-1 thanks to a double from Michael Gregory.
