FANS of the BBC drama Wolf Hall will be able to wander around their favourite places from the series, thanks to new location trail published by the National Trust.

It has teamed up with a host of visitor attractions including a number of privately-owned houses supported by the Historic House Association and places cared for by Cadw and English Heritage.

The map of the 18 locations used in the BBC 2 hit series includes five National Trust places in Wiltshire such as Lacock Abbey and Great Chalfield Manor, near Holt.

The six-part series charts the rise of Thomas Cromwell, the son of a humble blacksmith who became King Henry VIII’s chief minister, as he navigated the corridors of power in the Tudor court and stars Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis.

Robert Floyd, tenant of Great Chalfield Manor, which opens for the season in April, says they have had a number of phone inquiries about visits since the show was first broadcast last month.

He said: “We will be very pleased to have more people come and visit the grounds based on it being on Wolf Hall.

“We enjoy filming and we have been lucky enough to have quite a lot of filming been done here in the last 20 years and we enjoy seeing it on the screen when the programme or film is finished.

“We get nearly 20,000 visitors a year and we were lucky to have them film here in April and July last year with the entire cast.”

Great Chalfield Manor has previously featured in The Other Boleyn Girl and Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

Harvey Edgington, head of filming and locations at the National Trust, said: “I think we can expect to see something in the region of a 25 per cent increase in visitors, which is great news for these historic places as the additional revenue will help secure their future for generations to come.”

The National Trust properties accounted for around 40 per cent of the locations used in the filming of Wolf Hall.

Kristine Heuser, marketing manager at Lacock Abbey, said she hopes visitor numbers will increase since the grounds were featured on last week’s episode and they will be accommodating the demand by putting on displays of pictures of the cast and crew to show when they filmed the series on location last summer.

The Wolf Hall locations map is available from www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wolfhall and visitors are advised to check individual opening times before visiting.
