STAND-IN skipper Simon Ferry will lead Swindon out against the manager who gave him his break in English football this evening – but the midfielder prefers to remember the good times under Danny Wilson rather than the bad.

The former Town boss brought the Scot to Wiltshire from Glasgow giants Celtic in 2009, and guided Swindon to the League One play-off final during Ferry’s first campaign at the County Ground before a disastrous season saw them relegated 12 months later.

Wilson returns to his old club for the first time since his departure this evening with Sheffield United, and Ferry doesn’t want relegation to cloud everything his old boss achieved with the Robins.

“In my first year Danny brought me down here from Celtic and he gave me my chance in the team and we got to the play-off final, so I have to thank him for that,” he said.

“Everyone seems to remember the bad points, but we weren’t much fancied in the first year I came here and I was told we would be in the middle of the table. So for the group of the players to get to the play-off final meant we did really well, and it is Danny who picked the team and things like that.

“The second season didn’t go exactly as planned, but that sort of thing happens in football.

“People remember the bad points in football and the second year was a disaster, and that is probably why he will be remembered for that.”

Like the rest of the Town squad Ferry is keen to put Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Macclesfield behind him, and wants to help the club re-find the home form which saw them storm to promotion last season.

“After a bad performance you want to get back on the pitch and put it right, and we have done quite well here against big teams so if we beat them it could make up for Saturday.

“Our home form has not been great and we know that, and I think we have been better away from home than we have been at home this season. We need to start doing well at home because that is a good way to get promoted.”
