AS Bolton defender Joe Riley’s proposed move to Swindon falls through, a current Town loanee is keen to make his temporary switch to the County Ground a permanent one.

The Advertiser understands right-back Riley had a change of heart after travelling to the club for talks with manager Paolo Di Canio, and returned to the north west without completing a deal.

While the Italian will now have to focus his attention on other targets, central defender Darren Ward has revealed he is keen on making the move to Wiltshire full-time, although he intends to concentrate on football rather than his future.

“It is up to the manager, but I am very happy here and I am pleased with how things have been going. although it is the club’s decision,” Ward said.

“All I have been doing is playing and enjoying it, and hopefully that can continue and I can carry on contributing to where the club wants to go.

“It would be very interesting and something I would be keen on, but it is still a little way away and hopefully we can continue to do well.”

During his time at the club Ward has played alongside Alan McCormack, Joe Devera, Aden Flint and Troy Archibald-Henville at the back, and has revealed the hard work which goes into forming so many different partnerships.

“It is a lot of hard work in terms of working with each other and getting to know your partner,” he said.

“I am not one of those people who like to go into things blind, and it is nice to get to know someone on the training pitch and talk about the situations you are going to be in.

“Recently with Joe (Devera), the pair of us have worked hard on the training pitch and there is an awful lot of time and effort which goes into these things.

“We need to get to know each other, and get to know each other’s habits and ways of playing we all have.

“We all try to play the way the manager wants us to play, but there are also individual skill sets and weaknesses that you have to play with as well.”
