JOE Hughes is the new Southern Area light-welterweight champion after stopping his opponent in the 10th round.
The 24-year-old from Malmesbury was given his long-awaited shot at the Southern Area light-welterweight title at the O2 Arena.
He took on 30-year-old 2010 Commonwealth Games quarter-finalist Philip Bowes and the fight was stopped in the 10th round.
Hughes, whose original crack at the Southern Area belt was curtailed by illness in July, was boxing on the undercard of heavyweight star Anthony Joshua’s first-ever title fight, with Welsh WBC international, British and Commonwealth champion Lee Selby also in action in a world title eliminator.
