SWINDON’S Jazz Carlin continued her fine form as she was among the European winners on day one of the Duel in the Pool in Indianapolis.

Despite Carlin’s success in the women’s 400m freestyle, Europe have a lot to do on day two as they look to overturn a 74-48 deficit.

The 25-year-old Tigersharks swimmer set a new personal best, beating the standard she laid down last week when winning gold at the European Short Course Championships.

Carlin lay in third place at the halfway stage behind leader Hali Flickinger and Leah Smith, but reeled in American Smith with 100 metres to go before putting on the burners in the last 50 metres to claim the five points.

The Commonwealth gold medallist recorded a time of 3mins 58.07secs, just 0.19secs ahead of Flickinger, who claimed three points for USA, with Lotte Friis picking up the final point for Europe.

Europe’s other wins came from fellow Brit James Guy (men’s 400m freestyle), Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu (women’s 400m medley and 200m backstroke) and Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen (100m butterfly).

Carlin goes again this evening in the 800m freestyle with coverage starting from 7pm (GMT).
