JAMES Brophy believes Swindon Town do not need to make sweeping changes to their squad during the January transfer window.

Town chairman Lee Power and director of football Tim Sherwood are on an active recruitment drive this month as they look to bring in players that will help fire the team up the League One table.

Although new faces have yet to arrive, with Swindon actually in a weaker position than at the end of 2016 following the premature ending to Michael Doughty and Darnell Furlong’s loan spells from Queens Park Rangers, Brophy is not overly concerned and reckons only a couple of new faces are required to make Town the finished article.

Any potential arrivals could push Town’s current players down the pecking order but Brophy is sure competition for places can bring out the best in the team.

“We’re always aware that if you don’t perform, there is going to be somebody to take your place but I think there is excitement because we’ve got a strong team at the moment and we’re probably only a couple of players away from having a real good team,” said Brophy.

“I think, since I’ve been here, there’s been a mixture of players coming in and out, so I think, recruitment-wise, they’ve done very well because all the players get on with each other and they’re all similar personalities.

“We’ve got a good squad – when I came back against MK Dons, I looked to the right of me and I had Michael Doughty and I looked to the left of me and I had Nathan Delfouneso, so it was the strongest bench, for sure, since I’ve been here.

“So we’re not too far away in terms of squad and team – I think we’ve got a very good team here – but there’s been too many games where it’s been tight and we haven’t taken our chances, and therefore we haven’t picked up as many points as we’d want.”

Brophy is currently in his second season at Town, having been signed from non-league outfit Edgware Town last summer and is already just two games shy of racking up 50 appearances for the club.

Plucking potential diamonds from the non-league scene has been a feature of Town’s transfer policy during Power’s tenure as chairman and Brophy says the likes of John Goddard, Jermaine Hylton and himself are hungry to pay the club back for the opportunity.

“If you look at a lot of players here, Swindon Town are probably one of the only clubs that have given people chances,” said Brophy.

“You’ve got a real mixture of players – you’ve got players from non-league and you’ve got players from big clubs that haven’t quite made their mark yet.

“I think we’re all thankful to a club like this that has given us a chance.”
